On October 5, Wizards of the Coast announced a round of booster changes starting in 2027. Headline: God Packs are coming to every Magic Multiverse set. The trade-off: foil commons and uncommons are going away.

The short version

All of this is from Wizards’ own announcement. The changes begin with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, which Wizards calls the first Magic set of 2027 and which releases February 5, 2027. Wizards also says none of this comes with a price change; the stated goal was to make boosters more exciting without raising MSRP.

God Packs

Wizards describes a God Pack as a booster where every nonbasic card is a rare or mythic rare.

Booster Pack (1 in 1,000): 14 rare or mythic cards.

  • 1 God Pack celebration card
  • 10 non-foil rare and/or mythic rares
  • 2 non-foil Booster Fun rares and/or mythics
  • 2 traditional foil Booster Fun rares and/or mythics

Collector Booster (1 in 300):

The Collector Booster God Pack. Image: Wizards of the Coast.

  • 1 God Pack celebration card
  • 1 foil land
  • 3 foil default-frame rares and/or mythics
  • 3 non-foil Booster Fun rares and/or mythics
  • 5 foil Booster Fun rares and/or mythics

Wizards notes the Collector version’s five-card slot is like the “foil fancy slot” but times five, so in theory it could hold multiple headliners. It calls that pretty improbable.

Other additions

Japan Showcase cards, previously a Collector Booster thing, can now come out of the wildcard slot in Booster Packs as traditional foils. Foil rare and mythic drop rates also go up in Booster Packs.

What’s leaving

  • No foil commons or uncommons in Booster Packs. If you open a foil, Wizards says it will be a rare or mythic.
  • Collector Boosters drop two foil commons and one foil uncommon from the foil slots. Some foil commons and uncommons stay there.

Wizards’ reasoning: players skip those cards, and it needs printing capacity for God Packs and the Japan Showcase slot. It also admits that removing cards doesn’t make Collector Boosters more exciting by itself.

What we don’t know yet

  • Nauctis set details beyond the February 5, 2027 date.
  • How the odds feel in practice. The announcement gives rates but no pull data.
  • Any effect on secondary-market prices. Wizards makes no claim about that, and neither do we.

Our take

Cutting foil filler for a shot at 14 rares is a fun pitch, though 1 in 1,000 means most of us will read about God Packs rather than open them. Whether the foil-common cut stings depends on how you collect.
